The ashtanga yoga practice has it's main facets of tristana, meaning the synergistic quality of asana, breath, and bandha. Underlying correct breathing is a structured framework known as the vinyasa krama. Many people seem to know what vinyasa is, but few are familiar with the word krama. Krama means, process, order or succession. The breath coordinated process or order of movements is the ashtanga vinyasa yoga method's core.
If you can understand this layer of the practice, a whole new level of discipline and focus can be accessed. A new appreciation for the method and its intricacies and what you're doing relative to the practice will be understood.

This workshop will bring a whole new attitude to the student as they work on all styles of back bending but we will place focused attention to the practice of dropping back/standing up. Many yoga students from all traditions can be frightened at the mere thought of beginning this process. This will be an afternoon to demystify and unpack some of those fears. We will look at how the spine, shoulders, pelvis all contribute and work together in this process along with breath, concentration and mind. Working with each students power and potential this afternoon will 'unlock' the fear, develop faith, and finally find freedom!

Taking inspiration from the ceramics wheel one must first slowly learn how to find center before the vessel can grow, move, take shape and find freedom. Students in the workshop will find their center and confidence in Urdhva Dhanurasana from there each student will be empowered and carefully guided to fluidly move into and out of a new shape. Just as at the potter’s wheel some will take flight, some will ground down, and some will topple over. Most importantly all will learn, lighten, and have a lot of laughs.
Space limited, so pre-registration is really important!

For thousands of years, yoga has been taught from teacher to student on a one-to-one basis. Traditionally, a student has been taken through his or her own development at an appropriate pace. This method is still used in Mysore, India where Sri K. Pattabhi Jois taught this method, and his grandson, R. Sharath Rangaswamy, teaches today.
In Mysore classes, students are taught individually in a group setting. Beginners are introduced to a set sequence of poses little by little and are encouraged to remember the sequence as they progress. More experienced practitioners are guided to deepen and further develop their practice, as they more through each series. Thus each student works within the traditional series, but with integrity at his or her own pace.
The consistency of sequence in Ashtanga yoga allows students to focus on the sound and rhythm of the breath rather than on the voice of a teacher, making practice a moving meditation and allowing a deepening connection to the practice. As students advance through the Ashtanga series’ at a pace that matches their individual needs and abilities, they continue to receive individual, tailored instruction, hands on adjustments, and personal attention from the teacher.
Over the course of the series, students will be encouraged and inspired as they discover how attention, discipline and commitment create a fulfilling and honest practice.

"As a student and a teacher of yoga there is no difference in the way I practice the movement of the body through asana exploration and the movement of sound through the practice of chanting. The study of these aspects of yoga simultaneously has led me to understand the tradition of yoga more fully, to teach with more clarity, and to sit in a state of yoga more readily. This is why I call these reflective practices." Jill

There are over 25 definitions for the word sound. They range from the intensely scientific to a softer qualitative expression. This week we will explore the many meaning of sound in conjunction with our ever-expanding experience of practice.
Practice means repeat, repetition builds strength...what are you repeating?
Along with a week that is chocked full of breath, and bandha. There will be an opportunity to go deep with commitment and consistency in the asana exploration. Perhaps the most exciting element of the week will be the practice of Shruti parampara. Shruti parampara is the practice where one hears and then memorizes in their heart for further retention and dissemination. This is they style in which we will have daily study of the yoga sutras from Pada 1.1 all the way up to and including Patanjali's own definition of sound practice.

This 2-day course is designed to introduce a deeper relationship to
the Traditional Ashtanga Yoga Method, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of
Mysore, India. In this weekend long workshop we will dive deeply into the
often unseen structure that is the heart of the Method. One of Guruji’s
most repeated teachings is “99% practice 1% theory.” As is the way with
many great thread like teachings there is something that should be
understood. It is not enough to practice, what Guruji is suggesting is
proper practice. The proper understanding and employment of vinyasa
karma, breath pattern, bandha as energy, and drsti as focus.
This workshop will be a collage of practice, and theory filled with some
really informative tips and tricks for making sense of the sequence,
fettering out suggested meaning, and feeling around for the more internal
aspects of this method. We will learn to count and to be counted. There
will be plenty of time for questions, chanting, and silent reflection.
While this workshop is appropriate for all levels it may be most
interesting to those who have a practice and would like to understand more
deeply the design and structure of the tradition.

Learning to See
One of the most important skills a teacher can develop is the practice of observation. This is the practice and development of increased sensitivity. In this workshop, we will first wake up these skills with observation, going beyond looking into the clarity of seeing, going beyond the noise of hearing to the silence of listening. This is a key component in practice as well as in great teaching.
Responding Appropriately
Adjustments to yoga poses come in a variety of forms including physical, verbal and even energetic cues. In making hands-on adjustments, it is imperative to realize that you are adjusting a student, not an asana. In this workshop, we will will work with this increased sensitivity toward each individual in a pose, as well as exploring the teacher's own understanding of the asana itself through personal experience.
Over the course of two days, this workshop will then explore safe and intelligent adjustments, an understanding of what the intention or quality of each asana contains and where a student is in his or her own journey of understanding and experiencing a pose and what level of information they can eventually absorb from methods of deliveries the adjustment a teacher has decided to give.
Jill is available for a variety of workshops throughout the United States and world.
